Gym cardio kickboxing classes and punch bags workouts have almost zero value for actual self defence.
Hitting a punch bag is nice, hitting focus pads is better, but NOTHING is more important that actual sparring with a EXPERIENCED self defence instructor. Starting with 14oz boxing gloves, then when more experienced MMA gloves, eventually bare hands full contact sparring in your regular everyday clothing (because that's how it's most likely going to be when you are assaulted).
Question: Have you even been on a step ladder and it wobbled? That split second adrenalin dump of fear and the inability to make any decisions apart from trying not to die, is all you will be capable of when you are faced with a REAL self defence situation. Your ability to switch from victim to taking the fight to your assailant is your ONLY DEFENCE. No b.s. fancy technical blocks is going to work, and no amount of working out on a punch bag in the safe controlled environment of a boxing gym is going to help either at this point.
Your training needs to be tested. Often. And on someone that scares you...just a little. Only an experienced instructor knows how to turn this on without hurting you.
