Suddenly you are approached by a drug fuelled knife wielding assailant, set on robbing you and willing to stab you if needed, his two friends in the background will happily join in too. You have only seconds before your primitive fear and freeze response kicks in. Do you really think that all the hundreds of small technical self-defence type moves currently being taught in the comfort and safety of dojo's will actually work in this situation? Youtube videos only encourage and fuel the fantasy with beautifully choreographed and overly complicated moves demonstrated in the comfort and safety of a dojo or gym, and always with a WILLING and COMPLIANT training partner, who stand still (who the hell ever stands still in a life or death fight for survival?)
A perfect example is the video below, a beautiful demonstration of the Filipino knife fighting system Kali. Never heard of Kali? Think Jason Bourne movies. The fictional character carefully choreographed fighting skills are based on Kali.

Watch closely, the instructor does indeed almost stab himself! And do you really think your assailant will stand still like this demonstration? Hell no! He will try and get to the knife and step into you...and the knife will be pushed into you!
